Ubuntu (tutte le versioni) installare driver Nvidia

Salve a tutti!
Il posto l'ho scritto per dare una mano ad Infinity, ma vale per tutti.
E' la strada che ho seguito per installare sul mio portatile, con Ubuntu 9.04, gli ultimi driver Nvidia.
La procedurta dovrebbe, e dico dovrebbe, funzionare con tutte le versioni di Ubuntu a partire dalla 8.04 e successive.
In pratica si aggiungono i repository ufficiali nel sistema di aggiornamento software di Ubuntu (non la sto a fare tanto tecnica, è tanto per capirsi) e così l'impresa, per aggiornare i driver, diventa più semplice, inoltre vengono messi a disposizione, quando escono, i driver aggiornati.

Istruzioni per avere sempre i driver Nvidia aggiornati

Apriamo il terminale e per prima cosa installiamo la la chiave d'autentificazione scrivendo:

sudo apt-key adv --recv-keys --keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com --recv-key 0x1dabdbb4cec06767

a questo punto aggiungiamo i Repository alla nostra Distribuzione scrivendo (sempre da terminale):

Per Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic
sudo echo "deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/nvidia-vdpau/ppa/ubuntu karmic main" | sudo tee -a /etc/apt/sources.list

Per Ubuntu 9.04 Jaunty
sudo echo "deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/nvidia-vdpau/ppa/ubuntu jaunty main" | sudo tee -a /etc/apt/sources.list

Per Ubuntu 8.10 Intrepid
sudo echo "deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/nvidia-vdpau/ppa/ubuntu intrepid main" | sudo tee -a /etc/apt/sources.list

Per Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy
sudo echo "deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/nvidia-vdpau/ppa/ubuntu hardy main" | sudo tee -a /etc/apt/sources.list

a questo punto aggiorniamo la lista di software disponibile per la nostra Distribuzione scrivendo:

sudo apt-get update

Riavviare.

Verificate in "Sistema/Amministrazione/Driver hardware" se avete nella lista nuovi drivers installabili:
> se ci sono installateli (se volete)
> se non ci sono:
> provare a ridare il comando: sudo apt-get update
> se compare dopo un po la finestra di aggiornamento Software (i driver dovrebbero essere nella lista)
> se non compare dopo un po la finestra di aggiornamento Software date il comando: sudo apt-get upgrade

Io ho installato gli ultimi driver in questo modo ed ha funzionato, inoltre ora vengo informato sempre di tutti gli aggiornamenti disponibili e non devo diventare matto ogni volta per aggiornarli.

Non c'è nessun bisogno di riavviare una macchina linux per la semplice compilazione e installazione di un modulo...
in effetti non è quasi mai necessario un reboot in ambiente linux
(sostanzialmente solo quando installi un nuovo kernel )

ok, l'unica cosa che non ho capito è la chiave di autentificazione;
il comando : sudo apt-key adv --recv-keys --keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com --recv-key 0x1dabdbb4cec06767
va bene per tutti oppure quello è il tuo caso per autentificare e io ne ho un'altro? lo so sto dicendo delle ca**ate ma c'ho un po di dubbi :S

"Va bene per tutti" perchè la chiave non è personale ma è associata al repository di launchpad
In parole povere la chiave serve ad apt per autenticare i pacchetti che scarichi da un determinato repository, per verificare che provengono effettivamente da quella sorgente.
Se usi apt-get install su un repository per il quale non hai la corrispondente chiave, avrai un errore del tipo:

W: GPG error: [indirizzo repository] Release:
The following signatures couldn't be verified because the public key is not available

e ti verrà chiesto di scegliere se proseguire nell'installazione oppure annullarla

Aggiunta alle istruzioni

Le istruzioni che ho scritto funzionano sempre o quasi. A volte possono esserci problemi con alcuni aggiornamenti, l'aggiornamento dei driver delle schede video ogni tanto fa le bizze, ancora.

Con le istruzioni che ho scritto sopra anche gli aggiornamenti dei driver video vengono compresi negli aggiornamenti proposti dal sistema (semplicisticamente parlando).

Aggiornando però a volte capita che al successivo spegnimento e avvio ci siano problemi proprio con i driver video.
Nel caso accada si deve avviare con impostazioni video minimali e quindi seguire le istruzioni che ha scritto Ichi, e cioè:

se hai problemi fai così:
$ sudo apt-get install envyng-qt
$ sudo envyng-qt

selezionare il driver compatibile/consigliato e fai applica.

Verificare successivamente se il driver viene utilizzato dal sistema andando in, a volte capita che non sia utilizzato:

Sistema-->Amministrazione-->Driver hardware

Se risulta nessun driver utilizzato, scegliere dalla lista il più recente (con il numero più alto) e fare Applica.
Verrà richiesto di Riavviare il sistema.
A questo punto dovrebbe essere tutto a posto e il driver ultimissimo è in funzione.

Speriamo che un giorno anche i driver video abbiano un iter di utilizzo più umano!

Cmq per chi non vuole impazzire con repository, chiavi, envyng, ecc. ecc esiste un sistema molto semplice per installare i driver nvidia
sulla vostra linuxbox che è quello di scaricarveli direttamente dal sito nvidia.com (io faccio così sulla mia debian/testing visto che i driver nvidiia presenti sono
decisamente obsoleti)
Per esempio se vogliamo installare la versione dei driver 185.18.36 per amd64, diamo da un terminale:

$ sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-185.18.36-pkg2.run

prima di eseguire il comando è necessario però terminare il server grafico X (ci sono vari modi, per esempio se il vs. diplay manager è kdm basta dare da un tty il comando
/etc/init.d/kdm stop)
Inoltre, affinché la compilazione del modulo avvenga con successo, è necessario avere installati nel vs. sistema tutti una serie di paccheti: gcc, i linux-headers del vostro kermel, le binutils e forse altro che in questo momento non ricordo
Ovviamente questa procedura ha qualche controindicazione, ossia nessun aggiornamento automatico in caso di nuove release e la necessità di ripetere l'installazione dei driver ad ogni installazione di un nuovo kernel.
Ah, dimenticavo...dopo l'installazione non è richiesto nessun reboot (vero, ale? ), giusto un /etc/init.d/kdm start

Infatti il reboot è indicato per "semplificare" la procedura a chi non è avvezzo a comandi o altre diavolerie.

Speriamo comunque che un giorno sia tutto semplificato.
Lanci un comando e amen.

Anzi, speriamo che un domani nVidia e AMD/Ati rilascino open il codice, tanto che se ne fanno ...
Peraltro AMD/Ati, se non ricordo male, ha già fatto un passo in questa direzione.

La comunità potrebbe migliorarlo un bel po, sci sarebbero i driver nei repository e il casino sarebbe finito o abbastanza finito.

Beh, siamo su *nix non su windows...quindi secondo me è indispensabile essere un po' avvezzi allo smanettamento....
altrimenti linux non te lo gusti neanche
E poi nonostante tutti gli sforzi che si stanno facendo per portare linux sui desktop (con grandi risultati cmq) sfido chiunque a sviluppare un'interfaccia grafica
che riesca anche solo ad avere il 30% delle potenzialità di un terminale *nix, da dove puoi gestire ogni bit della tua macchina

Hai provato ad utilizzare envyng-qt ?

con envyNG mi dice che tutti i driver che sono disponibili non sono compatibili.

Ho letto i post velocemente e ringrazio davvero molto Ito per il suo apporto.

In questo periodo, che durerà ancora circa 2/3 settimane ho pochissimo tempo in ufficio e fuori, non posso essere molto utile alla risoluzione di problemi.

Cercherò di riattivarmi il prima possibile.

Dunque Infin1ty, il supporto per la tua scheda è stato introdotto con i driver
190.42, quindi "giustamente" envyng ti segnala come non compatibili le release
presenti di default in jaunty
Quello che non capisco è perchè envyng sembra ignorare i driver del repository di launchpad
( a proposito apri il file source.list con un editor di testo e rimuovi le righe duplicate con "deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/nvidia-vdpau/ppa/ubuntu jaunty main" e lasciane solo una!)

Cmq non posso fare verifiche approfondite perchè non ho ubuntu sul desktop e il portatile con
kubuntu mi è morto (crash dell'hd)

cmq prova a fare un

$sudo apt-get install nvidia-glx-190

e dicci che succede

Bene, pare che i driver siano stati installati correttamente...verifica lanciando un'applicazione opengl che effettivamente sia così!
E ricordati di cancellare le righe doppie nel file sources.list per eliminare
il noioso warning di "Duplicate sources.list entry" ogni volta che esegui apt-get!
